Volunteering Opportunities

SYCC is always looking for passionate, dedicated volunteers to assist with our exhibit hall and outdoor programming during the annual public season, November 1st - April 15th.

Volunteer Needs

Engage with visitors to the Suncoast Youth Conservation Center Exhibit Hall and exterior areas. Duties include:

  • Greeting and interacting with visitors.
  • Supervising animal ambassador interactions.
  • Scheduling and delivering public "meet and greets" with one or more ambassador animals.
  • Showcasing hands-on Florida wildlife discovery activities.
  • Ensuring all signage is prepared for the day and SYCC is clean and ready for public visitors.
  • Locking and unlocking the front and rear doors of the Suncoast Youth Conservation Center building.

In addition to Exhibit Hall Attendant duties above, assist SYCC staff with youth-centered conservation education and outdoor recreation programs. Duties include:

  • Public inshore saltwater fishing.
  • Public archery using compound bows.
  • Field Trip Assistant.
  • Special Event Assistant.
  • Setup and clean up prior to and following events.

Assist as a group in maintaining the sensitive ecosystems that surround the Suncoast Youth Conservation Center. Duties include:

  • Litter clean ups
  • Land Management
  • Invasive Species Removal
  • SYCC Grounds Maintenance

Volunteer Requirements

Volunteers must be at least 14 years old. Those ages 14-15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. 

Youth volunteers aged 16-17 may volunteer without a parent or guardian present but must have written parent/legal guardian permission prior to volunteer service. 

Based on s. 110.1127, F.S., volunteers must undergo background screening using Level 2 (s. 435.04, F.S.) screening standards, as a condition of volunteering or continued volunteering. Volunteers working with children 10 or more hours per month must complete a Level 2 fingerprint screen processed through the AHCA’s Background Clearinghouse Results Portal, and an Affidavit of Good Moral Character.
